Functional fitness, barbells, cardio suite, 3D body-scanner, sauna, ice bath at K2 Gym, Newquay

K2 Gym started life in 2003, behind what was the Safi Hotel. In the early days it was a place to lift weights and train for kickboxing. Today it is still owned by founder Dirk Parker and occupies the top two floors oof the former Barracuda building on East Street, Newquay, opposite the train station.

I've been going to K2 Gym on and off over the 20 years of its existence; whenever I’m in a structured training phase it is my go-to. There are a lot of gyms in Newquay, I’ve been to most of them, and often they’re really good. What pulls me toward K2 is the easy-going vibe in there. There’s a whole spectrum of members and while the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, there’s a real sense of live-and-let-live. No one’s watching or judging anyone. You really have space and freedom to do the type of workout you want to do.

The other big draw are the facilities. The lower floor houses the cardio suite (complete with my personal favourite – the Concept Ski Erg), expansive combat sports area with heavy bags, sled track, battle ropes, kettlebells, heavy tyre, sauna, showers, ice-bath and 3D body-scanner. The upper floor holds the weights. Three squat racks, power cage, bumper plates and Olympic barbells, extensive dumbbell rack, an additional functional fitness area with jump boxes, and finally what I would bet is the largest collection of resistance machines in Newquay.

For these two reasons - friendly vibe and comprehensive facilities – I find K2 to be the best gym in Newquay to offer my clients personal training. We have the space and choice to do what we want, when we want and have the freedom to adapt as required.
