Beach and oceanfront training from Surf Sanctuary at The Headland Hotel, Fistral Beach
In Cornwall, sunlight is at a premium. So on nice days (or even rainy days if you like) we have the option to train from Surf Sanctuary in the private grounds of The Headland Hotel. Surf Sanctuary is owned by Natural Scientific PT Dom Moore since 2014. It has parking, showers and warm dry changing rooms so is an ideal base for outdoor training.
Directly outside Surf Sanctuary the hotel lawns are great for kettlebell and bodyweight exercise routines. Very close by on the beach, the sand dune path up to the golf course is an excellent hill-sprint course. Running barefoot in the sand and dashing through the cool, shallow surf puts an exhilarating twist on running that machines and concrete cannot offer.
The South West coastpath runs right underneath Surf Sanctuary and a flowing trail leads us out to the wild Towan Headland with all sorts of natural features to challenge your proprioception and agility. Of course, being a qualified surf coach, SUP coach and surf lifeguard, Dom can get you in the ocean with or without a board for an adventurous aerobic experience.
Outdoor training is a wonderful supplement or 'swap-in' to your structured training programme. It's also an excellent adjunct for surf fitness as you are mentally and physically conditioning yourself in a simiar environment to the one you surf in.
